Joplin MO: From “Show Me” to “Show Me the Money” |

© Jack Cashill O s Debbie Schussel reports, the tornado-ravaged Joplin Public Schools (JPS) have apparently accepted a million dollar matching grant from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). OK, as Schussel observes, the “long term partnership” between these two unlikely entities might unduly influence the JPS curriculum, given the UAE’s “track record in the hate speech business, funding anti-American, anti-Semitic, and Holocaust-denying speeches and books around the world.” But hey, as JPS superintendent C. J. Huff notes, the laptops purchased through this grant will “help prepare our students for 21 st century jobs.” Better still, if the partnership works well, JPS grads might find some of those jobs in UAE where work is plentiful. In fact, some 80 percent of UAE workers are expatriate non-citizens. True, given the horrid conditions in which they live and their inability to change jobs without the employer’s permission, these debt-ridden, non-citizen workers flirt with indentured servitude. True too, the workers’ passports are routinely confiscated, and they aren’t allowed lunch breaks even on 120 degree days. But why worry about those trifles if the million bucks can save the Joplin teachers an increase in their co-pays? |
